Arise Africa Symposium in Nairobi

December 20, 2024

In November, the Arise Africa Symposium took place in Nairobi, Kenya, bringing together approximately 80 participants, including church leaders, journalists, lawyers, and civil society members.

This three-day event (November 6–9) was intentionally designed to harness the knowledge and expertise of its carefully selected attendees. The goal was clear: to “stop the violence and start the healing.” Participants were encouraged to come "together again to learn, care, and pray." The Secretary General of the Alliance of Evangelicals in Africa, a key partner in the Arise Africa Campaign, inspired the audience with a call to action: “to stand in the gap, to plan, to advocate, to see change” for Christians facing persecution. Rev. Dr. Obi Matlhaope emphasized the transformative power of unity, saying, “People called by God, coming together at the right time in the right place, meeting for the same purpose... they can light a fire.”

Dane Ole Shani, CEO of Open Doors, addressed the three responses to persecution: endure, challenge, or flee. He highlighted the need for the Church to support believers in all scenarios, while urging the audience to courageously confront false narratives surrounding the realities faced by Christians in sub-Saharan Africa. He ended with a challenge: to join the Arise Africa Campaign by “contributing with your knowledge, expertise, and your prayers.”

A physical Tree of Prayer and Justice stood in the auditorium, providing participants with a tangible way to connect their prayers with those of others. Leaves at the base of the tree, sent in by supporters of the campaign in the UK, symbolized this shared commitment to justice and healing.
